HONDURAS

Honduras is a bit of a hard country to talk about. It is not the best country in Central America. It is probably the worst. At the same time it is also the biggest by land mass. I personally spent no time on the mainland of Honduras. I wouldn't really recommend that anyone do any different outside of potentially a few notable places. Copan, or maybe Tela. But other than that I think it's a place that can be avoided and skipped for the most part. I don't like saying that a place, let alone a country, should be or could be skipped because I firmly believe that most places have places worth seeing and exploring. However, mainland Honduras is one of those places that I would say you can probably skip. With almost everyone having a limited amount of time to travel, there are just simply better places to spend your time.   Honduras was unfortunate when the borders were drawn or naturally created whenever the country became a thing. They have almost no exposure to the beautiful West Coast, and the majority of East Coast is rather barren and uninhabited. In other words it's not quite as blessed from a coastal natural beauty perspective as any of the other Central American countries. From the big cities perspective, Honduras is world famous for being dangerous, and until very recently, held the title for murder capital of the world. While I didn't experience any of this danger and all of the Hondurans I met were great, the country just isn't all that safe to travel in, and there isn't much to do or see. I'm sure that Hondurans would disagree with me, but for me, mainland Honduras is a skip. Spend your time in other places.   With all that being said, Honduras has amazing aspects, — almost exclusively, the islands off the East Coast. Otherwise known as the Bay Islands, which are pristine Caribbean islands that boast some of the best diving in the Caribbean — hell, the world. Utila is the hotspot out here for the backpacking community. It's a bit of a backpacking and diving paradise. I have never been to a place that more exemplifies the sought-after culture of scuba diving and good living than Utila does. There's much more about that on the Utila page. All that being said. Honduras is an amazing country to come visit. However, stick to the islands off the coast. If you are traveling cheaply, you will likely be taking a bus through the country. Stick your head out the window, watch as the cities pass, and that's pretty much all you need to see if you ask me. Honduras, however, does have one of my absolute favorite cheap foods and street food. The 'Baleada'. Make sure you try these when you are in the country.
