la ceiba, HN

This is going to be a quick callout for a place. La Ceiba is a very important landmark for anyone who is traveling to the Bay Islands, — Utila or Roatan, by land. So bus or shuttle. Even if you are flying into San Pedro Sula and then busing and ferrying out to the islands to avoid the cost of a flight to the islands from here it's an important spot.   La Ceiba is the last stop on the journey out to the Bay Islands before you need to take a ferry. So when you are making the trip your shuttle or your local bus (if you are a brave soul) will stop here. Depending on where you are coming from, the shuttle may drop you off late at night or at a time when you won't be able to make the final ferries for the day. This happened to me for example.   As a result you may have to pass a night in La Ceiba. Now La Ceiba isn't a great place either. It's a kind of depressing place that I wouldn't want to spend any more time in the place than I absolutely had to. I arrived at night. I slept. I woke up in the morning and made my way to the ferry. Nothing more.   I have an accommodation recommendation below that's decent and easy for all of those people who just need to spend a quick night before hopping on the ferry. The ferry schedule out to the islands can be found here.

GENERAL OVERVIEW

  • LOCATION - La Ceiba is located in the far north of the country along the coast. It's right along CA - 13, — the coastal road that connects much of coastal Honduras. It's about a 4-hour ride from San Pedro Sula over to La Ceiba. So it's not a short drive at all. It's the closest big city on the mainland to the Bay Islands, so it's where the ferry transportation lives. The biggest one is Dream Ferries. The ferry schedule can be found here. The last ferry out to Utila is at 4:30. So if you arrive here later than 4:30, which is extremely likely, then you will have to spend a night here. It's not the worst thing, the hostel below is where your shuttle will drop you off, and transportation to the ferry in the morning can be arranged there.

  • ACCOMMODATION -

    • Hostal Los Guacamayos - This is the place to stay in La Ceiba. They are interlinked with the shuttle companies so the shuttle will drop you off right at the hostel when you get into town. Additionally, they will arrange for transportation for you to get to the ferry in the morning. It's located right in town, just an easy 5-10 minute ride from the ferry. The rooms are nice enough and the price is really good as well. They also will arrange for all your shuttle transportation out of here. No matter if you are going to Belize, somewhere else in Honduras, or even Mexico. You can book your transport here. A room for the night here is only $10.

  • EATS - You can grab some light food in Hostel Los Guacamayos.

  • NIGHTLIFE - Not sure.

  • SIGHTS - The ferry.

  • SURFING - Nothing.
