I have split these regions up basically on where I found the surf spots to be. Nicaragua for me, was primarily surfing. The Boom is the North, Miramar and Puerto Sandino is the middle. The middle of Nicaragua is also extremely rural, but the towns of Miramar and Puerto Sandino are much more developed than anything up in the north. That’s not to say that by your standards reading this you will find it developed. Nicaragua is a rural place, and the middle is no exception. But here you have one of the longest — if not the longest wave in the country, along with some nice punchy beach-break slabby type stuff. You will probably also not be spending any time here unless you are here to surf. Additionally, in this part of the Nicaragua summary is Managua. I will say much more about this place that deserves nothing to be said about it, on its specific page. But Managua is perhaps the place I have been in the world with the least amount of redeeming qualities I have ever experienced. Finally, included in the middle are two of the most magical places in Nicaragua. Granada and Ometepe. They were two of my favorite places in the country, even though they are landlocked and no where near the sea. Ometepe is the world's largest freshwater island and there's just something special about it. Granada, which sits on the lake, had a very lovely little backpacker-town vibe to it that really agreed with me.
