The northern part of Nicaragua is probably the most rural part of the coastline that I encountered. The places that I have put in the North are the far Northern Coast, and Leon. I kind of grouped them together when I did it, so for me they are kind of a package deal. The Northern Coast is the most rural part in an otherwise extremely rural coastline in general. So that should say something. Additionally, I think that the far north — specifically the places that I have deemed the Northern Beaches, are the least traveled beaches in the country. If you aren’t surfing, I would be very surprised if you came here at all. The surf up here, specifically at a place called the Boom, in my opinion is some of the best in the world. Life up here is slow. There's really nothing to do but go surfing in the mornings, and just hang out all afternoon. This is why I say that if you aren’t surfing I would be surprised if you had any desire to come up here. However, if you are surfing, you should hit this part of the country. A lot of people skip it, and in my opinion it's some of the most special surfing I have ever done. Additionally, up here in the North you have the very popular tourist town called Leon. You, as a backpacker, will almost certainly be coming to this large by Nicaraguan terms city. One of the best things to do in the country is right outside — the incredible Cerro Negro volcano and volcano boarding.
