ZIPOLITE, MX

This won't be a typical summary. Just a small generalization and introduction to what Zipolite is. In short, Zipolite is a small little beach town that is home to the only legal nude beach in Mexico. Its culture is kind of like that. A very free and accepting place where you can pretty much do anything that you want.    Zipolite is renowned in the area for being progressive on the hippy front, but also a hub for the LGBTQ community in Mexico. There's a vibrant gay scene going on. Given that the beach of Zipolite is the only legal nude beach in all of Mexico, you can get a pretty cursory understanding of the type of vibe that is to be expected here in this town. They have really, well idk who they is, I guess the Hoteliers, have really grasped onto the whole nude beach thing. It's a big part of the culture, so much so that there are two hotels here — one called 'Nude', and the other called 'Naked'. Pretty funny if you ask me.    It's not dissimilar from Mazunte in its hippy roots either. It's a really nice town though. With a cool little touristy walk that has cool restaurants and stuff. The beach is also really nice. It's a long white sand stretch of beach, with pretty good waves as well. I actually preferred Zipolite to Mazunte, its twin brother to the north. It's a more relaxing environment as well. Mazunte is pretty relaxing, so that is saying a lot as well. Zipolite also has some waves, which is nice.

GENERAL OVERVIEW

  • LOCATION - Zipolite is located about 1 hour and 30 minutes South of Puerto Escondido. More than likely you will be coming here from Puerto Escondido.

    • DRIVING - It's not a far drive, and if you are driving you simply just drive south along MX 200 until you reach the town of San Antonio. At this point you take a right onto MX 175, a coastal loop that leaves the main road of MX 200 and goes through Mazunte and Zipolite. It's very simple to get there, and at San Antonio there will be plenty of signs telling you that you have arrived. From the MX 200, after you take the exit for 175 it's only about 10 minutes to get to Zipolite. You'll know when you're there. The road in is really rural, then when you hit a town it will be Mazunte. Zipolite is about another 10 minutes down the road.

    • BUS - There is a very easy bus that takes you directly from downtown Puerto into Mazunte. It costs 40 pesos, so no biggie. They leave a few times a day. Once you arrive in Mazunte you have to catch a collectivo over to Zipolite. They should be going through town at the bus stop. It's going to cost you about 20 pesos, or 1USD. The ride will take about 20 minutes.

  • ACCOMMODATION - There's places everywhere to stay here in Zipolite. A lot of them are pretty expensive, and there really aren't very many hostels here actually. There's a few places I found nice.

    • Ballelita Posada - I wouldn't really look any further than this if I were you. It's not that expensive. Well located. Right on the beach. There's a bar, and it will be a social place as well.

    • Hostal Maracuya - One of the only places available on Hostelworld. It's a nice spot, well located, pretty new. One of the only legit hostels in town.

  • EATS - There's lots of food options here. Along the main strip or Avenida Rosa Blanca there's food everywhere. Just walk down and see what you like and you can't really go wrong.

    • Alma Verde - was a nice spot we stopped into for lunch. Wasn't super-cheap but was cute.

    • Mr Taco - a good little taco spot on the cheap side of town. The cheap side of town is the southern part of town. Past the touristy walking street. Things get cool and not touristy over there. Not that Zipolite is really that touristy to begin with though.

  • NIGHTLIFE - I didn't really participate in the nightlife here in Zipolite. I kept hearing when I was in Mazunte though that if you wanted to go out later in the night then Zipolite was your option in town. The beach has been known to get a little wild at night there, and rumors of big beach orgies were swirling around when I was traveling. If that's your thing...

  • SIGHTS - Zipolite is very chill. There isn't a whole lot to do other than just chill and relax just like Mazunte. But here's a few things:

    • Yoga - this is a yoga hotspot. If you are into Yoga it's an excellent place to do so.

    • Get naked and go to the beach - the beach is really nice right out front. Go get naked.

    • Nothing - doing nothing and hanging out is a great activity in Zipolite.

    • Mazunte - going to Mazunte is one of the most common things to do if you are staying in Zipolite. And vice versa.

  • SURFING - There's a pretty decent beach break right out front of Zipolite. It's not really a wave that I would seek out to go to for the surfing of it, but if you are already in Zipolite then you should get in for a surf. It's pretty much just your run of the mill beach break.
