MAZUNTE, MX

This won't be a typical summary. Just a small generalization and introduction to what Mazunte is. In short Mazunte is a quaint hippy village about 45 minutes south of Puerto Escondido. Life is slow here, things are mellow. Mazunte, is a place that my friends and I came to refer to as 'Hippy Disneyland'. It's not the only place that I ever will refer to as Hippy Disneyland but it certainly is one of them. There's a lot of people walking around and calling this place home that are living life based on the phases of the moon. Walking around in oversized elephant pants. White guys with dreads dressed in beige dresses. The whole thing. We have all seen it before. That's what this place has become. I am not saying that any of this is a bad thing. On any given night out you will find people congregating in the streets. Sitting on the ground and playing music together. Dancing in the streets. It is a lovely vibe at times. But at the same time sometimes it felt like too much to rely solely on your zodiac sign to determine your personality. Along with all the free love and that has come some really cool shops and restaurants. Health food places. Yoga and spirituality. It has a lot of that. It's one of best places in this part of Mexico to come if you are looking to dive into spirituality. So there's that. It's also a very beautiful place. The beaches are stunning. The water a fake-looking color of blue. I do think that this place has changed a lot in the past decade or so. As all of these cool hippy spots do. The people who came here and created the culture years ago have been pushed out by some of your bohemian bitcoin boys or trust fund hippies. That's par for the course though. For me, it was a great place to go visit for a few days.

GENERAL OVERVIEW
-
LOCATION - Mazunte is located about 1 hour and 10 minutes South of Puerto Escondido. More than likely you will be coming here from Puerto Escondido.
-
DRIVING - It's not a far drive and if you are driving you simply just drive south along MX 200 until you reach the town of San Antonio. At this point you take a right onto MX 175, a coastal loop that leaves the main road of MX 200 and goes through Mazunte and Zipolite. It's very simple to get there, and at San Antonio there will be plenty of signs telling you that you have arrived. From the MX 200, after you take the exit for 175 it's only about 10 minutes to get to Zipolite. You'll know when you're there. The road in is really rural, then when you hit a town it will be Mazunte. Zipolite is about another 10 minutes down the road.
-
BUS - There is a very easy bus that takes you directly from downtown Puerto into Mazunte. It costs 40 pesos, so no biggie. They leave a few times a day.
-
-
ACCOMMODATION - Mazunte is a small little place, but still there's a good amount of accommodation options. There's a ton of hostels but you probably wouldn't guess that from googling online. Almost none of them have an online presence. You just have to show up and figure it out. There are some nicer hotel options, and then loads of little local hotels that are a great option as well. Airbnb has lots of stuff if you are traveling with a group. Some of the things in town will book up though, so if you want any of the better places to stay then you should book in advance.
-
Cabins Balamjuyu - This is the best place to stay in Mazunte. It's a beautiful little hotel up on the cliff with a stunning view of the ocean. They have basic accommodation but the atmosphere is great. With just such a stunning view.
-
Hostal Casa del Angel - Another good option at the entrance of town. You will have to walk into town but it's a good option.
-
Hostal El Manguito - Small little spot, well-located close to the beach. Good option, and the best located from a being in town perspective.
-
La Playa Hostel - best located hostel from a beach access perspective.
-
Bajo Las Estrellas - Camping-centered option in town if you are looking for cheap.
-
-
EATS - There's a lot of good little eatery options here in Mazunte. Some really nice local food and also some great international cuisine that came with the hippies and expats who live here. There are so so many restaurant options. I can't really even begin. Varying price points as well. But go explore, eat some local food. Just eating through Mazunte is a thing to do.
-
Taqueria "El Mazunte" - This was my favorite place to eat. A local little taco place that was serving great food and cold beers for cheap.
-
Restaurante Los Traviesos - Good spot for breakfast
-
La Palapa Cometa - Coolest spot in town to eat. Located in this wooden kind-of-like bamboo structure with an awesome upstairs area. A must go in Mazunte.
-
La Colmena - Cute little tasty vegan spot.
-
Maralto Restaurant - Nice little restaurant.
-
-
NIGHTLIFE - There's certainly a night life aspect here. Lots of bars, but everything shuts down pretty early. People go down to Zipolite where there are beach raves and stuff like that if they want to have a big night out. But there's certainly things to do during the night here. It does quiet down pretty early though here. Nothing is really going to go past midnight from what I found.
-
La Bodega - cool little open concept bar area. Nice place to hang out and have some drinks.
-
Cocol - little cocktail/mezcal bar near the beach.
-
La Palapa Cometa - it's a great place to drink as well as eat.
-
The Tienda - not sure how common this is here but one night we all just drank in front of the tienda. It's common to do this all over Latin America and I'm sure it is here too. So sitting on the ground, drinking beers from the Tienda, and hanging out with people is a great thing to do.
-
-
SIGHTS - Mazunte is pretty chill. There isn't a whole lot to do other than just chill and relax. But here's a few things:
-
Yoga - this is a yoga hotspot. If you are into Yoga it's an excellent place to do so.
-
Beach - the beach out in front is beautiful. Just spending your days at the beach is a great thing to do.
-
Nothing - doing nothing and hanging out is a great activity in Mazunte.
-
Playa San Augustinillo - This is the small town just south of Mazunte. It's hardly separate but it has a different vibe. Going to spend some time in this town is fun.
-
Zipolite - going to Zipolite is one of the most common things to do if you are staying in Mazunte. And vice versa.
-
-
SURFING - Not much going on here. If you want some waves, there are lots to the north, or you can go south to Zipolite for some beach break waves.
