COLIMA & MICHOACAN SURF TOWNS

Colima and Michoacan are two states in Central Mexico that each border the Pacific Ocean. Colima is tiny, and Michoacan is rather big. Neither of these states have the best reputations when it comes to safety. Historically there has been a lot of gang violence in the area, local militia and police corruption tales. This was no exception when I was there as there was a little cartel war going on in the southern part of the state of Michoacan that stopped me from driving down the coast for a few days. However, with all that being said I never felt unsafe in the area. Keep your wits about you, don't do anything stupid, and you will be fine. The people in both of these states I found to be lovely, accommodating, and friendly.  These two states also happen to be home to some of my favorite surfing in the entire country. A part of me hopes that not many people actually end up navigating to these pages. Some of the places in here are pretty special, albeit known in the surfing world. If you are traveling around Mexico and surfing is your goal, you should have heard of these places. That's why I have included them, rather than keep them off. The entire coastline of these states is pretty wave rich, and there are other waves in between what I have outlined here that you can explore as well.  The summaries of these towns will be relatively brief. They are surf towns and nothing much more than that goes on. But I will say that some of the most magical time I spent in Mexico was spent in one of these towns. It's pure, rural, raw and exciting. It reminded me of Baja, surf exploration. Surfers everywhere and not much else. If you dont surf, and aren't traveling with a board, I would say you can stop right here. There won't be much of a point for you to come to these areas. They are pretty hard to get to, there will be very limited infrastructure, no hostels, bars, or anything of that nature. But if you are surf bumming around, these may just be your favorite stops in the country.
