CANCUN, MX

Well this is Cancun. Almost everyone on earth probably knows what Cancun is, and a lot of people probably associate Mexico in its entirety with this place. I will be really quick with it. I hate Cancun. I think it is the worst place in Mexico. It's over-touristy, it's culture-less, it's fake, and it's not even pretty anymore as a result of what all of the over-tourism has done to it. Totally directed to the west. Priced for it as well. I will never spend time in this place. It's just not worth anyone's time. The beaches are going to be filled with US tourists of the worst breed. This isn't real Mexico. It's some fabrication of a beach paradise where you can come and be cultureless and irreverent in the face of other peoples' culture. It is however, probably the most popular place to visit in the whole country. With year-round sun, an unlimited supply or all-inclusive resorts, and one of the biggest international airports in the country, let alone the world. It is actually the 10th biggest airport in the entire world. Which is insane to me. Unfortunately though, if you are coming to Mexico, the Cancun Airport is going to be a likely option for you to fly into. Especially if you are coming from Europe, or the States if you are planning to visit this part of Mexico. It is the best option to get into the country for cheap. Below I will highlight a few of the important logistical aspects of Cancun. It is very close to places like Holbox and Bacalar, which are certainly worth visiting. As well as other places like Tulum, which are not. That is all the Cancun-bashing that I will do. I don't like it. I don't feel like it's a worthwhile place to visit, and spending time here is a waste of time. That's it. The silver lining of this place, if you are going to be here, is to just stay out of the hotel zone. In Central Cancun you'll find some off-the-beaten-path stuff that will be interesting. But there's so many other places that are more worth exploring than having to try and uncover the hidden local side to Cancun.
GENERAL OVERVIEW
-
LOCATION - Cancun is located in the state of Quintana Roo, at the Southeastern corner of the country of Mexico. It's all the way up at the Northeastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. So when you fly in here, you are relatively close to all of the main attractions in the Yucatan. Cancun itself being one of those as well. When you get to Cancun you are going to be within the following amount of travel times to the following popular destinations. So you really are close to everything.
-
Holbox - 3 hours
-
Isla Mujeres - 45 mins.
-
Tulum - 3 hours
-
Playa del Carmen - 2 hours
-
Cozumel - 2 hours 30 minutes
-
Bacalar - 5 hours

So with all the above locations mentioned, I would say the most important place to know about in the city is going to be the bus terminal. The way out of here! So when you get here, this is the first place you should go. It's located here. There is a direct ADO bus here that will get you to the bus terminal in Downtown Cancun. Here you can get a bus to pretty much anywhere in the country you want to go. Or at least get that journey started. The ride will take about an hour, and cost $6.
-
From the Cancun Airport there are also direct buses to Tulum and Playa Del Carmen. It's easy to get a bus from here and go to these destinations directly.
-
ACCOMMODATION - I wouldn't stay here unless I had to for an early flight departure or a late flight arrival which would require me to spend the night in the city. I would recommend staying somewhere near to the bus station so that you can easily walk there. Cancun, especially Cancun downtown can be a little bit sketchy at night. So being close to the place you need to go if you are going to be walking around with all your stuff at night is good.
-
EATS - I don't think I have ever had any food here.
-
NIGHTLIFE - A ton of it. I just think it's terrible.
-
SIGHTS - Plenty of awful touristy things to do.
-
SURFING - Nothing here. Flat everywhere in QROO.
