Tobacco Caye, bz

This won't be a typical summary. Just a small generalization and introduction to what Tobacco Caye is. I first went here to this tiny little island off the coast of Central Belize when I was in high school. At the time it was the most interesting and amazing place that I had ever been in my life. It was also one of the first places I ever went scuba diving. So the place has a special place in my heart. I actually remember seeing a group of guys camping on this island, and being so interested in how they got there and being inspired to do something like that once in my life. So I guess you could say Tobacco Caye is kind of where traveling like I do all got started.    The island itself is so small that you can fully walk around it in no more than 5 minutes. The surface of the flat sandy island is spotted with palm trees, wooden structures on stilts and over the water, a number of small little dive destination hotels, one or two restaurants and some local dwellings in the middle of the island. The shores of the island are rocky and corally with some sandier bits. The shorelines are also covered in emptied out conch shells. Creating an almost barrier 'wall-like' structure at point. It's pretty magical, to be honest.   The majority of the people on the island (probably no more than 80 at any given time) are there to dive. Some old crusty divers call this little diving paradise home, and there are a number of locals that have grown up and live off the land essentially here on the island.   If you are coming here, it will require a boat ride from the mainland. — A small town called Dangriga, which oddly enough is known to be the cultural capital of the country. It certainly may be if you call culture an entire lack of tourism. It's better than the alternative so frequently found in Belize though.    But if you love diving, and want to do something that makes Belize amazing and adventurous, then Tobacco Caye is exactly what you are looking for. I love it here. If I return to any place in this country it will be here.

GENERAL OVERVIEW

  • ACCOMMODATION - There's plenty of options for accommodation here in Tobacco Caye. Nothing is going to be that cheap, but not that expensive either. You're at a dive destination, so things are going to be expensive anyways. I have stayed at Tobacco Caye Paradise, and Reefs End Lodge. Both are great options. Paradise has really cool overwater bungalows. Diving can be done directly from each of these places, and they have 'in-house' food. If you bring a tent with you, you can surely find a place to park that as well.

  • EATS - All of the hotels will have food served as a part of your stay, at least everywhere I stayed. Meal time is announced with the ringing of a bell. Head out to the docks around sunset time, and maybe you can get some fresh lobster or fish as well.

  • NIGHTLIFE - no nightlife here but there are two places that you can drink.

    • Sunset Bar - Great place to — you guessed it, watch the sunset.

    • Reefs End - Awesome spot on the water. They also have some food options. It's probably the most classic spot on the island. Feels peak Caribbean.

  • SIGHTS - Go diving. That's the thing to do here. If you aren't diving, you will have nothing to do but relax.

  • SURFING - Flat Caribbean.
