placencia, bz

This won't be a typical log. Just a short intro about what Placencia Belize is. Yes, the word sounds a hell of a lot like placenta. Placencia is a small town in Southern Belize. It's located along a long, skinny barrier peninsula. It's kind of a resort town. — Reminiscent of the Florida Keys, both geographically and literally. There's nice restaurants and tons of people on vacation. It's one of the more Americanized places that I went in Belize. But it's one of the only coastal, non-island places in Belize that's worth going to, so I figured I would write a little bit about it. If you come here, there's pretty much the same things to do as the rest of the country. Touristy stuff like eat, drink, and go diving. Outside of Placencia are some pretty amazing little cayes that have nothing more than ranger stations, and are picturesque as picturesque gets. So the diving here is cool, and the tour itself is cool as well. There are also cool little walking streets with colorful buildings and shops and stuff — so the town, if you get here, is pretty visually pleasing, and not the worst place in the world to spend a few days. Now if you are backpacking, you are probably going to be ignoring and avoiding Placencia at all costs. It's expensive, family-oriented, and there's not much to do for younger people. My dad was visiting me here in Belize, and we went together, which is probably the only reason that I went. So if you are backpacking, you can probably avoid Placencia. But for the sake of being thorough, and outlining what the country really has to offer, I figured that I would include it here, and just call it out. It's got a really pretty beach. It's one of the better beaches in the country. However, there is— like there is in most of the country, a HUGE problem with the sargassum in the summer months.

GENERAL OVERVIEW
-
LOCATION - Placencia is located way down in Southern Belize. In order to get to Placencia there's a few ways — the most popular probably being to fly into the small regional airport. It's called PLJ, and it's right outside the resort town. The other way would be to drive down from anywhere else in the country. To drive here you will take the Southern Highway all the way down to a small town called Santa Cruz. You will then take Placencia Rd out onto the barrier island all the way into Placencia. As you drive down the barrier island you will pass vacation home after vacation home, then resort after resort. Eventually you will arrive in the little town of Placencia. Once you are there, you are pretty much there depending on where you are staying. Town is all the way at the end of the barrier island, so when you have gone as far south as you can, you have arrived. If you are staying in town, then everything is walkable — if not then there will be golf carts to rent, or taxis to get you into town, which is where all the restaurants and stuff are.
-
ACCOMMODATION - There's tons of places to stay. Hotels, Airbnbs — all that. There is actually a hostel here too. Which surprised me because of the lack of a backpacking scene. It's called Anda Di Hows, and it's a good option for $20.
-
EATS - Tons of places to eat here. A few places I had that I liked are described below. The food here will be pretty expensive though.
-
Rumfish - This is probably the best restaurant in town. It's well designed — the food is delicious, but expensive. It'll be pretty full every night with tourists. Their second floor location is pretty great though. Certainly a place that feels like you are on vacation.
-
Barefoot Beach Bar - Beachfront bar and restaurant. Nice place to chill and eat.
-
-
NIGHTLIFE - There's a couple of fun bars here on the beach that you should go to. They can get pretty rowdy, but no one is coming to Placencia for the nightlife.
-
Tipsy Tuna Sports Bar - The best and most popular place for nightlife. A cool Caribbean spot right on the water. Not to be missed if you are in town.
-
Big Titty Rum Bar- Not only does it have the best name of any bar I have ever heard of, but it's a nice little spot to get a drink in town.
-
Barefoot Beach Bar - Beachfront bar and restaurant. Nice place to chill and eat.
-
-
SIGHTS - Go diving. That's the thing to do here. If you aren't diving you will have nothing to do but relax.
-
SURFING - Flat Caribbean.
