Belize city, bz

This won't be a typical summary. Just a small mention of what Belize City is. Belize City is not a great place. It's the biggest city in Belize, and there are only about 60k people living in it. That should give you an idea of just how small the country is. It was either my least favorite, or 2nd least favorite of all the major cities in Central America. In my opinion it has nothing to offer. Rundown buildings, sewage spilling out into the streets, no decent food or visually pleasing things to look at generally, no beach or waterfront that is appealing in any way. So for me, it's just a general no go. However, you are probably going to have to go through it, — actually almost certainly going to have to go through it, if you are coming through the country. Here's me telling you, "just pass on through, baby". The airport here is coded BZE, and it's likely where you will fly into if you are taking an international flight into the country, and also where the hopper planes leave from to go out to the Northern Islands. The airport itself is about 10 miles or 15 kms northwest of the actual city itself. If you are flying into the airport and taking a plane to the outer islands, then you are all set. The plane will just be leaving from the airport. However if you are taking a ferry out there, — a very common way to do things, then you will have to take some form of bus or taxi transport to the ferry station that is located here. If you are driving through Belize City, be careful where you park your car. It's notorious for theft and robberies. If you park it in one of the port lots and want to head out to the islands you won't have anything to worry about though. There's no car ferry out to the islands so you have to leave the rig. It will be fine. It's surveilled, with fences usually, and the golden rule of 'find someone to pay to park your car' is certainly in effect here. Your car will be fine.
GENERAL OVERVIEW
-
LOCATION - It's located in Northern Belize, about a 2-hour and 45-minute drive from the border of Mexico. It's located on the Caribbean Coast, and is importantly kind of the gateway to the northern Cayes of San Pedro and Caye Caulker, which are heavily traveled. To get into Belize City you'll either be driving, which is a straight shot down the Northern highway from the border of Mexico or East along the George Price Highway from the border of Guatemala — or you'll be flying. You'll fly into the international airport here called BZE, which is located about 10 miles North of the actual city. But like I said above, you don't want to spend much time here in Belize City.
-
ACCOMMODATION - Accom. options not great. Try to avoid getting in here at a time that requires you to spend the night in Belize City.
-
EATS - Unsure.
-
NIGHTLIFE - Unsure.
-
SIGHTS - Nothing really.
-
SURFING - Flat Caribbean.
